Select from a list

If you are not sure what terms to enter into a search field, many of the fields on the search pages have a select from a list link next to them which provides access to a browsable list of search terms available for you to use in International Index to Music Periodicals. These lists contain either keywords or phrases from which you can choose the most appropriate terms for your search.

If you have entered a search term into a search field and then click the select from a list link, the list will open with the nearest match to that term highlighted. Your selected term is also displayed above the list in the Look for search box.

Alternatively, you can leave the search field blank and click the select from a list link to display the start of the list. The Look for search box will be blank.

The number of entries containing a search term is displayed next to each one in the list.

Using the list to select terms

Enter the first few characters of the term you wish to look for and click the Look for button to jump to the section of the list containing the nearest match

Click the Up and Down buttons to scroll through the preceding and following sections of the list.
Click the checkbox(es) next to the term(s) you wish to use in your search.
Click the Select button to transfer them back to the relevant search box.

The search term will be pasted into the search box preceded by the EXACT operator and in quotation marks e.g. EXACT "Acoustic Guitar" to indicate that the search will retrieve exactly the word or phrase chosen from the list.

If you select more than one search term International Index to Music Periodicals automatically combines them using the OR Boolean operator.

Note: lists containing fewer than 50 search terms will not display the Up and Down buttons or a Look for box.
